Online discussion around the etched glass model ranges from measured to alarmist. Some posts suggest the anti-glare coating degrades the OLED panel to the point of ruin. This review tests that claim directly across three controlled scenarios. The short answer: those posts are wrong.

Panel Supplier: Samsung or BOE?
Two panel suppliers are used in the OLED Steam Deck: Samsung and BOE. The supplier can be identified through desktop mode on the deck itself using a terminal command in Konsole.
A code of 03 30 in the first output line confirms a Samsung panel. The code 04 30 indicates BOE. Both units tested here returned Samsung panels. No BOE units have been publicly reported in the first production batch, but that change over time.

The 13 nit brightness gap between the two panels is real. It is not visible to the naked eye in normal use. The wider P3 gamut on the 1TB unit is a margin-of-error difference. On the numbers, these panels are effectively equal.
Three Real-World Scenarios

Both decks were tested outdoors in shade with 600 nits of peak brightness available. Both were playable. The gap between them is significant.
The glossy screen picks up every colour and movement from the surrounding environment. On darker games it becomes a near-mirror. On brighter games it is manageable but still distracting. The etched glass reflects the tree overhead but does not turn the scene into visual noise. Darker game areas remain readable.
For outdoor use, the etched glass wins clearly. The glossy screen’s advantage in controlled studio lighting does not survive uncontrolled outdoor conditions.
