Understanding RetroArch Cores: Which Ones Should You Choose? (2026)
RetroArch’s core download list contains over 100 entries. Many systems have three or four competing cores making similar accuracy claims. Choosing the wrong one means worse emulation, poor performance, missing features, or silent game compatibility failures. This guide gives the correct core for every major system and, critically, explains why each is the right choice — which almost no core guide does.
How to Think About Core Selection
Cores differ along three axes: accuracy, performance, and feature set. The right core depends on your hardware and what you prioritise. A cycle-accurate NES core is overkill on a gaming PC and may be necessary on a Raspberry Pi — depending on whether you want perfect audio timing or just smooth gameplay.

NES
Best core: Mesen Mesen is the highest-accuracy NES core in RetroArch. It passes virtually every NES accuracy test including sub-pixel sprite rendering, PPU timing, APU envelope behaviour, and mapper edge cases. Performance cost over less accurate cores is minimal on modern hardware.
When to use the alternative (Nestopia UE): On weaker hardware (Raspberry Pi 3B, old laptops) or for games where Mesen has a known issue. Nestopia is slightly less accurate but highly compatible and very light.
Avoid: FCEUmm — much older, less accurate, kept for legacy compatibility only.
SNES
Best core: Snes9x Snes9x balances accuracy and performance better than any other SNES core. It handles the vast majority of the SNES library correctly, runs on hardware from old laptops to high-end PCs, and receives regular updates.
When to use bsnes (Accuracy): For the handful of games that Snes9x does not handle correctly — primarily games that stress the SNES’s DSP chips (Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance uses the Super FX 2; Star Ocean uses the SA-1). bsnes runs a cycle-accurate simulation but is significantly more CPU-intensive.
Avoid: SNES9x 2010 — this is a backport to lower performance targets, not an update. It is less accurate than current Snes9x.
Game Boy / Game Boy Color
Best core: SameBoy SameBoy accurately emulates GB, GBC, and Super Game Boy hardware including LCD persistence effects (“ghosting”) that characterised real Game Boy screens, all of Nintendo’s built-in colourisation palettes for original GB games running on GBC, and correct Super Game Boy border support.
Alternative: Gambatte — lighter and accurate for the overwhelming majority of games. Better on weak hardware.
Game Boy Advance
Best core: mGBA mGBA is the definitive GBA emulator. It handles timing edge cases that earlier cores (VBA-M, gpSP) miss, has the best Game Boy Player emulation for GBA games that used the accessory, and correctly handles the GBA’s unique audio mixing. Sega Mega Drive / Genesis + Sega CD

For FM audio accuracy: Enable the Nuked OPN2 option in the core’s options. This is a cycle-accurate YM2612 FM synthesis emulator that produces correct timing for the Genesis’ iconic sound chip. Higher CPU cost but audibly better for games where music is central (Sonic 3, Streets of Rage 2).
Nintendo 64
Best core: ParaLLEl N64 ParaLLEl uses a Vulkan-based low-level GPU emulation approach that produces the most accurate N64 graphics of any RetroArch option. Handles the N64’s RDP (Reality Display Processor) at the silicon level.
Alternative: Mupen64Plus-Next — better compatibility for games that ParaLLEl has issues with, slightly less GPU-accurate. Use as a fallback when ParaLLEl breaks a specific game.
PlayStation 1
Best core: Beetle PSX HW Hardware-accelerated PS1 emulation with Vulkan. Supports internal resolution scaling (up to 16x native), PGXP geometry correction (eliminates the “wobbling polygon” effect), texture filtering, and widescreen hacks. The definitive PS2 visual experience in RetroArch.
On weak hardware: PCSX ReARMed — designed for ARM processors (mobile, Raspberry Pi) and significantly lighter. Less visual enhancement features but excellent compatibility.

Arcade (MAME and FBNeo)
For maximum accuracy: MAME (current version core) Updated regularly to match the standalone MAME release. Best accuracy, widest hardware support. Required for some newer arcade emulation additions.
For performance and fighting games: FBNeo FinalBurn Neo focuses on 2D arcade hardware (CPS1/2/3, Neo Geo, Data East, Konami, Taito) with less overhead than full MAME. Better choice for fighting game collections and FightCade-adjacent play.
Nintendo DS
Best core: melonDS DS Proper dual-screen support in RetroArch’s layout system, Wi-Fi emulation for DS games that check for local wireless, and the most accurate DS timing emulation in a RetroArch core.
Systems Where You Should Not Use RetroArch Cores
For PS2, GameCube/Wii, PS3, and Switch: use standalone emulators (PCSX2, Dolphin, RPCS3, Eden/Ryujinx). The standalone versions receive faster updates, have better per-game configuration, and substantially outperform the equivalent RetroArch cores where they exist.
