RetroArch Windows Setup Guide for Total Beginners (2026)

RetroArch is the most powerful piece of emulation software ever built — and the one that sends the most beginners running. A dark interface, a horizontal menu that behaves nothing like any normal application, and a directory full of cryptic file types combine to create genuine confusion on first launch. This guide removes all of that. By the time you finish reading, you will have cores installed, a controller mapped, a game running, and a real understanding of why RetroArch works the way it does.

What RetroArch Actually Is (and Why It Confuses People)

Most people think RetroArch is an emulator. It is not. RetroArch is a frontend — a launcher and interface layer that runs individual emulators called cores inside it. The cores do the actual emulation. RetroArch provides everything surrounding them: the interface, controller mapping, shader system, save states, cloud sync, netplay, and RetroAchievements integration.

This architecture is why RetroArch’s interface looks generic — it has to work for NES, PS1, N64, Saturn, and Game Boy simultaneously. Once you understand this, every confusing menu decision starts to make sense.

Step 1: Download and Install

Go to retroarch.com and download the Windows Installer version (not the portable zip — the installer sets up your config paths automatically). Run the installer, leave all defaults, finish. RetroArch installs to your AppData folder, keeping it cleanly separated from your other software.

On first launch you will see the XMB (the PS3-style horizontal sliding menu) or Ozone (modern flat design). Either works identically. Switch between them in Settings > Drivers > Menu if you have a preference.

Step 2: Run These Four Updates Before Anything Else

This is the step nearly every beginner guide skips. Skipping it causes baffling problems later: cores not appearing, box art not loading, database lookups failing.

Go to: Main Menu > Online Updater and run all four in order:

  1. Update Core Info Files — tells RetroArch about every downloadable core
  2. Update Assets — downloads fonts, icons, and UI graphics
  3. Update Databases — downloads the game database for playlist scanning
  4. Update GLSL Shaders — downloads the CRT and upscaling shader library

Do all four. Wait for each to finish. Then continue.

Step 3: Download Your First Core

Go to Main Menu > Online Updater > Core Downloader. The list is enormous. Here are the correct first choices by system:

The download happens silently. No progress bar — the core is ready when the status message clears.

Step 4: Map Your Controller Before Loading Any Game

This step lives and dies by one mistake: people skip hotkeys. Go to Settings > Input > Port 1 Controls and map your physical controller buttons. Save when done.

Then go to Settings > Input > Hotkeys and map these four at minimum:

  • Menu Toggle — brings the RetroArch overlay up mid-game
  • Save State — instant save
  • Load State — instant load
  • Fast-Forward — speed up grind sections

Without hotkeys, you must quit the game to access any RetroArch function. Setting them up now saves hours of frustration.

Step 5: Load Your First Game

Main Menu > Load Content. Navigate to your ROM file. RetroArch asks you to select a core — choose the one you downloaded for that system. Game starts.

The error most beginners hit: “No cores available” when navigating to a ROM. This means either the correct core is not downloaded, or the Core Info Files (Step 2) are out of date. Run Update Core Info Files again and re-attempt.

Step 6: The Scanning System — Build Your Game Library

RetroArch’s playlist system turns your ROM folders into an organised library with box art. Go to Import Content > Scan Directory, point it at your ROMs folder, and wait. Your games appear in categorised playlists.

The scan works by matching file hashes against the database you downloaded in Step 2 — which is why the database update matters. Games that do not match the database need manual adding.
