Ultimate Guide: Retro Gaming in VR on Meta Quest 3 with RetroArch & Emulation Station

You can revisit the golden age of Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, or the original PlayStation. Each offers something special for you. Combining VR with retro gaming creates an experience you never knew you needed.

In this comprehensive guide, I’ll show you how to transform your Meta Quest 3 into the ultimate retro gaming machine. We will use RetroArch and Emulation Station Desktop Edition. By the end of this tutorial, you’ll be playing classic games in an immersive virtual environment. It will feel like having your own personal arcade.

What You’ll Need

Before we begin, make sure you have the following:

Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S (Quest 2 should work but untested)
Bluetooth Controller – PS5, Xbox, or any Bluetooth controller
Developer Account – Free to set up with Meta
Developer Mode Enabled on your Quest
Computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux)
USB-C Cable to connect Quest to your computer
SideQuest – Free advanced installer software
ROMs and BIOS files for the games you own

Prerequisites: Setting Up Developer Mode and SideQuest

This tutorial assumes you’ve already completed the following setup steps. If you haven’t, there are excellent tutorials available online (which I won’t duplicate here to keep this guide focused):

Create a Meta Developer Account – Visit developer.oculus.com and sign up (it’s free)
Enable Developer Mode on your Quest 3 through the Meta Quest mobile app
Download and Install SideQuest from sidequestvr.com

Once these prerequisites are complete, you’re ready to begin the main setup process.

Understanding RetroArch vs. Emulation Station DE

Before we dive in, let’s clarify what these two applications do:

RetroArch

RetroArch is a front-end for emulators, game engines, and media players. It provides a user-friendly interface to access various emulation “cores” (essentially individual emulators for different systems like Sega Genesis, SNES, PlayStation, etc.).

Emulation Station Desktop Edition (ES-DE)

Emulation Station DE is a much prettier and more user-friendly front-end that sits on top of RetroArch. It provides beautiful game artwork, descriptions, and an overall better browsing experience. Think of it as your personal retro game library interface.

Cost Note: RetroArch is completely free. Emulation Station DE for Android costs £4 (about $5 USD) via Patreon. The Windows, Mac, and Linux versions are free. You can use RetroArch alone if you prefer not to spend money. I’ll show you how at the end of this guide.

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Step 1 Download Required Files

Download RetroArch APK

On your computer, visit retroarch.com
Navigate to the Download tab
Scroll down to the Android section
Download the 64-bit version APK file

Download Emulation Station DE APK

Visit es-de.org (Emulation Station Desktop Edition)
Look for the Android version
Click on the Patreon link (since it’s not available on Galaxy Store or Huawei App Gallery for Quest)
Sign up for the Patreon (£4) to get access
Download the latest version (as of this writing: v3.1.1 d39)
You can cancel your subscription immediately—you’ll still receive update emails and download links

Pro Tip: Even after canceling your Patreon subscription, you can still request update links. Use the self-service tool on their Patreon page whenever there’s a new version.

Step 2 Install Apps via SideQuest

Connect your Quest 3 to your computer using a USB-C cable
Put on your headset and allow USB debugging when prompted
Launch SideQuest on your computer
You should see “Oculus Quest 3” detected with a green indicator

Troubleshooting: If the indicator is yellow, amber, or red:

Try unplugging and reconnecting the cable
Try a different USB port
Turn your Quest off and back on
Make sure your Quest is powered on

Installing the APK Files

In SideQuest, click the box icon with down arrow (Install APK)
Browse to your Downloads folder
Select RetroArch APK and click Open
Wait for “Installing APK… All tasks complete” message
Repeat the process for Emulation Station DE APK

Step 3 Connect Your Bluetooth Controller

Before proceeding with setup in VR, you need to connect your Bluetooth controller to your Quest:

Put on your Quest headset
Open Quick Settings
Select the Bluetooth option
Make sure Bluetooth is turned ON
Put your controller into pairing mode:
1. PS5 Controller: Hold PS button + Share button until it flashes
1. Xbox Controller: Hold the pairing button on top
- Other controllers: Consult your controller’s manual
In the Quest Bluetooth menu, scroll to Other Devices
Find your controller (e.g., “DualSense Wireless Controller”)
Click Pair
Confirm the pairing when prompted

Your controller should now have a constant glow, indicating it’s connected and ready to use.

Step 4 Initial RetroArch Setup

In your Quest, go to Library → Unknown Sources
Find and launch RetroArch 64
Grant storage permissions when prompted
You’ll see RetroArch load and save configuration files

Configure Controller Input

The touch controllers don’t work well for navigation since RetroArch treats them like touchscreen input. Use your Bluetooth controller:

Navigate right to Settings
Select Input
Select RetroPad Binds
Select Port 1 Controls
Scroll down to Set All Controls
The system will prompt you for each button (D-pad Up, Down, Left, Right, buttons, etc.)
Press the corresponding button on your controller for each prompt

Note: On PlayStation controllers, Circle is typically the back button and X is confirm/enter.

Step 5 Customize RetroArch Interface

Let’s make RetroArch look better and easier to navigate:

From the main menu, navigate to Settings
Select User Interface
Scroll up to cycle to the bottom of the menu
Find Menu (currently set to “glui”)
Change it to XMB (PlayStation-style interface)
Press back to return to main menu
Navigate left, then all the way down to Quit
Relaunch RetroArch to see the new interface

Much better! The interface now has that classic PlayStation XMB look.

Step 6 Update RetroArch and Download Cores

Update RetroArch Components

Navigate to Online Updater
Scroll to the bottom of the list
Update each of these in order (wait for each to complete):
1. Update Core Info Files
1. Update Assets
1. Update Controller Profiles
1. Update Cheats
1. Update Databases
1. Update Overlays
- Update GLSL Shaders

Download Emulator Cores

Cores are the individual emulators for different systems. Here are recommended cores for popular systems:

Navigate to Core Downloader
Use the right shoulder button to skip sections quickly
Download these recommended cores:
1. Sega – MS/GG/MD/CD (Genesis Plus GX) – For Sega Genesis/Mega Drive
1. Nintendo – SNES / SFC (Snes9x) – For Super Nintendo
- Sony – PlayStation (Beetle PSX HW) – For PS1
Download additional cores for any other systems you want to emulate

Pro Tip: Check the RetroArch wiki for information about different cores and their features if you want to explore alternatives.

Step 7 Configure Hotkeys

Hotkeys let you access the RetroArch menu while in-game, save states, fast-forward, and more:

Navigate to Settings → Input → Hotkeys
Set up these essential hotkeys:
1. Hotkey Enable: Select button (this must be held to activate other hotkeys)
1. Toggle Menu: Triangle/Y button (Select + Triangle to open menu in-game)
1. Toggle Fast Forward: Right Trigger (Select + R2 to fast-forward)
1. Load State: Left Shoulder (Select + L1 to load save state)
- Save State: Right Shoulder (Select + R1 to save state)

How Save States Work: You can have multiple save state slots. To switch slots, bring up the menu and navigate to the save state slot option. This lets you keep multiple saves without overwriting them.

Step 8 Disable On-Screen Overlays

We don’t need on-screen notifications cluttering our VR view:

Go to Settings → User Interface
Find On-Screen Overlay
Turn it OFF
Navigate to Configuration File
Select Save Current Configuration
Quit RetroArch

Step 9 Set Up Emulation Station DE

From Library → Unknown Sources, launch Emulation Station Desktop Edition
Click Begin Setup
Click Grant Permissions when prompted
Set the Application Directory to the default “es-de” folder
Click Use This Folder and Allow
Set the ROMs Directory to the default “ROMs” folder
Click Use This Folder and Allow
IMPORTANT: Click Create System Directories (this creates properly named folders for each system)

Emulation Station will create subfolders for different systems (Genesis, SNES, PSX, etc.) that RetroArch will recognize.

Disable Touch Overlay

Press Start on your controller
Navigate to Input Device Settings
Find Enable Touch Overlay
Disable it (you’ll get a warning—that’s fine, we’re using a controller)
Confirm Yes

Step 10 Transfer ROMs and BIOS Files

Connect your Quest 3 to your computer via USB
Allow USB connection when prompted in your headset
On your computer, open the Quest 3 as a storage device
Navigate to the ROMs folder

ROM Folder Structure

You’ll see subfolders for different systems:

megadrive or genesis – Sega Genesis/Mega Drive ROMs
snes – Super Nintendo ROMs
psx – PlayStation 1 ROMs
Plus many others for different systems

Copy your legally obtained ROM files into the appropriate folders.

BIOS Files for PlayStation

Some systems (like PlayStation) require BIOS files:

Navigate to RetroArch → system folder
Copy your PlayStation BIOS file here (usually named something like “SCPH1001.BIN”)

Where to Find BIOS Names: You can find a list of required BIOS files and their exact names. Visit Retro Game Core’s Android Emulation Starter Guide for this information. Remember: BIOS files are copyrighted and should be extracted from systems you own.

Step 11 Test Your Setup

Disconnect your Quest from your computer
Launch Emulation Station DE
You should now see your systems listed (Genesis, SNES, PlayStation, etc.)
Navigate to a system using the D-pad
Select a game with the confirm button
The game will launch through RetroArch using the appropriate core

Try your hotkeys:

Hold Select + Triangle to bring up the RetroArch menu
Hold Select + Right Trigger to fast-forward
Hold Select + R1 to save state
Hold Select + L1 to load state

Step 12 Scrape Game Artwork (Optional but Recommended)

Scraping downloads beautiful artwork, screenshots, descriptions, and metadata for your games:

Visit screenscraper.fr
Click the flag to change language to English
Click Register and create a free account
In Emulation Station, press Start
Navigate to Scraper
Go to Account Settings
Enter your ScreenScraper username and password
Select Use This Account

Configure What to Scrape

By default, everything is enabled. You may want to disable:

Videos – Take up lots of space
Game Manuals – Also large files

Start Scraping

Go back in the scraper menu
Select which systems to scrape (or Select All)
Click Start
Wait while it downloads artwork and metadata

Free Account Limits: Free ScreenScraper accounts have daily limits. For small libraries (under 20 games), you’ll be fine. Larger collections may need to be scraped over multiple days.

Manually Scraping Individual Games

If a game doesn’t scrape automatically:

Navigate to the game
Press Select on your controller
Choose Edit This Game’s Metadata
Scroll to Scrape
If it still doesn’t find it, select Refine Search
Remove extra text from the filename and search with just the game name

Step 13 Customize with Themes

One of the best features of Emulation Station is customizable themes that completely change the look and feel:

Press Start to open the main menu
Navigate to UI Settings
Select Theme Downloader
Browse available themes (there are dozens!)
Each theme has variants for different styles, aspect ratios, and font sizes
Select a theme to download it

Apply Your Theme

Go back one menu to UI Settings
Select Theme
Choose your downloaded theme from the list
The interface will instantly change

Alternative: Using Only RetroArch (Free Method)

If you prefer not to spend £4 on Emulation Station DE, you can use RetroArch alone. Here’s how to set up your game library in RetroArch:

Make sure you’ve transferred ROMs to the ROMs folder as described earlier
In RetroArch, navigate to Import Content
Select Scan Directory
Navigate to the top category (RetroArch)
Select Parent Directory twice to reach the root
Navigate to the ROMs folder
Select Scan This Directory
Wait while it scans for games
Back out to the main menu

You’ll now see new icons for each system with games (Super Nintendo, Genesis, PlayStation, etc.). Your games are now accessible directly from RetroArch!

Launching Games

Navigate to a system (e.g., Sega Genesis)
Select a game
Choose Run
The first time, it will ask which core to use
Select the appropriate core (e.g., “Genesis Plus GX” for Genesis games)
Select Run again

All your hotkeys will work the same way as with Emulation Station!

Troubleshooting Common Issues

BIOS File Not Detected

If RetroArch can’t find your BIOS file:

While in a game (that requires BIOS), press your hotkey to bring up the menu
Navigate to Settings → Directory
Select System/BIOS
Navigate to where you placed your BIOS files
Select Use This Directory

Controller Not Responding

Make sure your controller is charged
Disconnect and reconnect the Bluetooth connection
Re-pair the controller if necessary
Verify you’ve mapped all controls in RetroArch

Games Not Showing in Emulation Station

Make sure ROMs are in the correct system folder
Check that system directories were created during setup
Try quitting and relaunching Emulation Station
Verify ROM file formats are supported (.bin, .iso for PS1; .smd, .gen for Genesis; .sfc, .smc for SNES)

Adjust Your View: Position the virtual screen at a comfortable distance and size using the Quest’s passthrough boundaries
