MIG Switch Dumper: Full Review and What It Means for Every Switch Owner

A small red box. A USB-C port. A cartridge slot. And a set of consequences that every Nintendo Switch owner needs to understand.

A note before we start This review covers the MIG Switch Dumper as a hardware product. It examines its broader implications for the Switch ecosystem. It does not endorse piracy or the cloning of games the reader does not own. The information here is relevant to all Switch owners, not only those considering a purchase.

What Is the MIG Switch Dumper?

The MIG Switch Dumper is a compact red device. It has a USB-C port on one end and a Nintendo Switch cartridge slot on the other. First, connect a cartridge. Then, plug the USB-C cable into a Switch or PC. The device then presents itself as a USB flash drive. The cartridge’s files become readable by the host device.

Think of it as an SD card reader, but for Switch game cartridges. The difference between this and a generic card reader lies in the specific files it exposes. It is also in what those files can be used for.

How It Works

Plug the dumper into a host device. Insert a cartridge. The device reconnects and a new folder appears containing the full set of files from that cartridge.

Those files include:

  • ROM file – the game data itself
  • Card ID set – cartridge identification data
  • Card UID – unique identifier for the cartridge hardware
  • ROM certificate – unique to each individual physical cartridge
  • ROM initial data – shared across all copies of the same game

The ROM certificate is the critical file. It is unique to a specific physical cartridge. No two copies of the same game share the same certificate. This file makes a 1:1 clone of a cartridge possible. It carries the authentication credentials that Nintendo’s servers check when a game goes online.

Games can be launched directly from the dumper without copying any files first. The host device reads the cartridge data live over USB. On an OLED Switch running the right software, Minecraft launched and ran from the dumper with no file transfer required.

Firmware and Internal Hardware

The update process is simple. Download the firmware file, drop it into the system folder on the device, and disconnect. On reconnect, the file expands from roughly 80KB to 272KB as the update is applied. No software required.

Inside the red case, two chips do all the work. The ESP32 handles input/output operations and manages FPGA updates. The Lattice FPGA interfaces directly with the cartridge slot and handles the decryption of game data. These are the same two chips found on the MIG Switch cartridge itself. The PCB is straightforward.

A Notable Side Effect: Emulation Outperforms Official Hardware

Minecraft was used as the test title. The performance was better when running through the dumper via emulation on a Switch OLED. This was compared to running the same game natively on the same device under the stock operating system.

Chunk loading pop-in, a persistent issue in the official Switch version of Minecraft, was visibly reduced in the emulated environment. This is not a selling point for piracy. It highlights Nintendo’s first-party software optimisation issues. These issues have not kept pace with the hardware’s actual capabilities when properly utilised.

What This Means for Every Switch Owner

The implications of this device extend well beyond the people who buy one. Two specific problems now exist for the wider Switch ecosystem.

Problem 1: Used game purchases carry new risk

Before this device existed, dumping a Switch game on a modded Switch produced only the ROM file. That file could be used for emulation or for playing the game on a modded system offline. Nintendo could detect and ban a Switch that went online with dumped content.

The dumper changes this. It captures the ROM certificate, which is unique to each physical cartridge. That certificate allows a cloned cartridge to authenticate online as if it were the original. If someone buys a game, dumps the certificate, and sells the cartridge, the new owner shares an authentication credential. This is shared with whoever made the dump. If the clone goes online simultaneously with the original, Nintendo detects two consoles. Both use the same cartridge ID.

Buying used Switch games now requires asking the seller whether they have dumped the certificate file from that cartridge. If the game has changed hands multiple times, the chain of custody is impossible to verify.

Problem 2: High-value games are prime counterfeiting targets

The MIG Switch hardware costs roughly $7 in components at volume. Add storage, a label, and a shell. Then, a convincing physical clone of a Switch game becomes viable to produce at scale. Games with high used-market resale values are the obvious targets.

Nintendo’s Position and What Comes Next

Nintendo has not publicly addressed the MIG Switch Dumper or its certificate cloning capability at the time of this review. That silence is not sustainable. If the same certificate appears on multiple consoles simultaneously, Nintendo’s servers can detect it. What action they take, and how they distinguish an original cartridge owner from a clone user, is not yet clear.

Nintendo might benefit if the used market becomes too risky to trust. This situation would push buyers toward new purchases. That argument has some logic. It underestimates how much the Switch’s accessible second-hand library has contributed to the platform’s longevity and reach.

Dumping Switch games was already possible before this product existed. What is new is the capture of certificate data and its practical use for online-authenticated clones. That is a meaningful escalation over what was previously achievable.

Verdict

The MIG Switch Dumper does exactly what it claims to do. The hardware is simple and well-built for its purpose. The ESP32 and Lattice FPGA combination is cheap, effective, and already proven in the companion cartridge product.

For the specific use case of backing up owned cartridges for personal use on supported hardware, it works without friction. Plug in, connect, read files. The update process is a single file drop.

The broader consequences are the more important story here. This is not a product that only affects buyers. Every Switch owner with a collection of games now operates in a different environment. Those with a habit of buying used cartridges are affected too. Anyone interested in the second-hand market experiences changes as well compared to before this device existed.

Ask sellers if they have dumped their certificates. Be cautious with high-value used titles from unknown sources. If a used copy of a popular game is priced suspiciously low, that indicates a serious issue. This is a more legitimate concern than it used to be.
