OBS Studio: Best Beginners Guide
OBS Studio handles streaming and recording for content creators across platforms. Free, open-source, and compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux. This guide covers installation, configuration, scene setup, and optimization for both streaming and local recording.
Download and Installation
Navigate to obsproject.com. Select your operating system. Download begins automatically.
Windows installation: Locate downloaded file. Run installer. Accept user account control prompt. Click Next through welcome screens. Choose installation directory. Default C drive works for most users. Click Install. Launch OBS when installation completes.
First launch presents basic interface. Bottom right contains primary controls.

Recording Configuration
Type: Standard
Recording Path determines save location for video files. Default saves to C drive. Click Browse to select alternative location like external drive or dedicated storage drive.
Recording Format: MP4. Easier for video editing than other formats.
Audio Track: 1
Encoder: NVENC (NVIDIA) or x264 (AMD)
Rate Control: CBR
Bitrate: 16000 for 1080p 60fps recording. Lower if footage lags during playback. Recording allows higher bitrate than streaming since internet upload speed does not limit local capture.
Remaining settings match streaming configuration: Keyframe Interval 2, Preset Quality (or Max for powerful systems), Profile High, Look-ahead unchecked, Psycho Visual Tuning checked, GPU 0, Max B-frames 2.
Audio Configuration
Navigate to Audio tab. Sample Rate and Channels appear for six audio tracks. Leave all at 160kbps. Only Track 1 requires configuration initially.
Critical setting: Change Channels from Stereo to Mono. Prevents audio playing through single speaker. Mono ensures sound outputs through both left and right channels.
OBS prompts restart to apply audio changes. Click Apply, OK, then Yes to restart.
After restart, navigate to Audio settings again. Desktop Audio and Mic/Auxiliary Audio require device assignment.

Desktop Scene

Multiple monitor setups: Dropdown menu selects which display to capture. Single monitor users see only one option. Click OK.
Webcam Scene
Select Webcam scene. Right-click Sources. Add > Video Capture Device. OK.
Device dropdown lists available cameras. Select desired webcam.
Configuration recommendations for Logitech C920 and similar webcams:
- Configure Video: Disable Auto White Balance
- Camera Control: Disable Auto Focus and Auto Exposure
- Resolution/FPS Type: Custom
- Resolution: 1920×1080
Click OK to apply webcam settings.
End Screen Scene
Select End Screen scene. Drag image or video file directly into preview window. OBS adds as source automatically. Grab corners to resize. Position as desired.
Webcam Overlay on Desktop
Creating picture-in-picture webcam over gameplay or desktop:
- Select Webcam scene
- Right-click webcam source
- Select Copy
- Switch to Desktop scene
- Right-click in Sources
- Select Paste (reference)
- Resize and position webcam overlay
Optional: Add decorative border by dragging border image file into scene. Resize and align with webcam overlay.
Audio Mixer Configuration
Bottom panel displays Audio Mixer. Two primary channels: Desktop Audio and Mic/Aux.
Controls for each channel:
